The wide open roads of Rajasthan passed before us as we cruised from Delhi toward Jaisalmer in March 2021. Leaving the bustling city behind under cover of darkness, our convoy of two vehicles wound its way through the quiet night on the long journey west. By morning we had crossed into Rajasthan itself, stopping briefly in Bikaner to fuel up and grab a quick breakfast. From there the highways remained in excellent condition, cutting directly through the heart of the Thar Desert towards our destination of Jaisalmer. Rolling sand dunes appeared on the horizon, broken only by occasional hardy shrubs and grasses stubbornly clinging to life in the arid climate. The wide open spaces and vivid hues of yellow and ochre sand presented endless photo opportunities to capture the dramatic scenic desert beauty.
Discovering Hidden Gems along the Journey
Pokhran: An Oasis in the Desert
As we drove through the late morning, Pokhran emerged from the desert mirage like a welcome oasis. Though small, this town retains its charm with its medieval fortress atop a rocky hill providing scenic views of the surrounding countryside. We stopped to explore the crumbling battlements and admire the exquisite architectural heritage before grabbing a hearty lunch of traditional Rajasthani fare. Refreshed and re-energized, we pressed on toward our final destination with the open road beckoning.
A Symbolic Village on the India-Pakistan Border
Only a short drive further brought us to the village of Longewala, steeped in history and military significance. It was here that determined soldiers of the Indian Army had turned back a larger invading Pakistani force during the 1971 war. Wandering through the sparse village among locals going about their daily lives, it was hard to imagine the bloody battles that had unfolded in these very sands. Paying homage at the war memorial, we stood in silent reflection on the courage and sacrifice of those who defended this remote outpost so valiantly. The visit left us with newfound respect for the resilience of the local community.

Leaving Longewala behind, the open desert stretched as far as the eye could see in every direction, broken only by low undulating sand dunes. What vistas presented themselves underneath the vast indigo sky! At last, as twilight fell, the beautiful cobalt-colored buildings of Jaisalmer came into view,rising as if from a dream against the dunes. We had arrived at our final destination after traveling over 800km across two days and were ready to immerse ourselves in the magic of the “Golden City”.
Exploring Jaisalmer’s Rich Heritage
For the next two days we explored the winding alleys and majestic buildings of Jaisalmer fort, including the elegant palaces built from the local golden-hued sandstone. Wandering through bazaars bustling with rural life, we took in the vivid scenes, tastes, and rhythms of a cultural gem still steeped in tradition. Joining other travelers at sunset to gaze upon the transforming hues of the fort as it blended into the dunes left us with memories to last a lifetime. Our road trip through Rajasthan had indeed unearthed a treasure trove of natural and cultural riches far beyond our expectations. The journey itself through history, landscape and community had rekindled our love of travel and adventure across open roads.
